One of the more fascinating wildlife moments I enjoyed this year involved this female Brown-headed Cowbird. This species is a noted brood parasite: the female will lay her eggs in other birds’ nests so that they raise her chicks for her. In this case she came to investigate an occupied Northern Flicker nest. The flicker was at home, however, and scared her away.
