One of the more fascinating wildlife moments I enjoyed this year involved a female Brown-headed Cowbird. It’s a species that is a noted nest parasite: the female will lay her eggs in other birds’ nests so that they raise her chicks for her. In this case she came to investigate an occupied Northern Flicker nest. The flicker was at home, however, and scared her away.
